Book Review: Guide to the Human Body

Guide to the Human Body is a family resource available from the Institute for Creation Research, a Christian organization dedicated to uplifting the truth and authenticity of God’s Word through creation-science research. As a part of this mission, they offer tons of great books, DVDs, magazines, and other materials for anyone to read and watch. I received this book in return for a review, and am delighted to share my thoughts with you.

Guide to the Human Body is just that: a descriptive, easy-to-follow resource that leads the reader through the inside and outside of our God-created bodies.

It covers the basics, like organ systems, DNA, health, and intelligence, but also offers insight on the body of Jesus, our created form, and the image of God. These “extra” focus points are the areas where ICR’s materials tend to shine, as they do not shy away from expressing the Gospel and pointing out God’s truth.

Like the other Guide To books, each page is loaded with colorful graphics and illustrations. The variety and amount of images make the book applicable for kids and adults alike; even my toddler likes looking through it with me. This book is very visual.

The reading level is aimed at older students, yet elementary-aged children would be able to understand most of the material if it were read to them. This book is by no means a difficult read, yet still offers plenty of information and facts. In fact, it’s really quite amazing how many different topics and tid-bits the ICR authors crammed into this compact book.

To be critical, I think sometimes the topics lack a little bit of depth, probably because there is only so much space/text for each topic. For example, I was reading about the appendix and how some people claim it has no purpose in the body. The authors countered this opinion but failed to offer insight about how, exactly, the appendix does have a purpose. I was left feeling like I didn’t quite get my questions answered.

That being said, please don’t discount this resource. I truly do give it my utmost recommendation and praise and believe it would be a wonderful asset to any home, whether that home is filled with children, older adults, or a single person. There is always something to learn.

One of my favorite things about ICR materials is that they are always Gospel focused while delivering scientific, intelligent, fact-based information. That combination is so invaluable and I’m glad that the ICR can promote such amazing creation-science research and make it available for anyone.

If you’ve been on the lookout for a Christian-based biology resource, give this one a try. I don’t think you’ll regret it.
